WA_MtStHelens - 163

At Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. On the hillside, and more obviously floating on Spirit Lake are thousands of dead trees, blown over or snapped in half by the force of the 5/18/1980 eruption of the volcano. The National Park Service decided to leave most of the area "as-is" to have the rare opportunity to study the natural recovery of a region after such an event. I hiked down to the shore of Spirit Lake (where this was taken) from the main road, which was a nice hike, but a lot further than it looked!! (09/23/2004)
